Downtown: Minneapolis in the 1970s Exhibit Opening

Where: Mill City Museum

In the 1970s, Dayton’s was in its prime, the new Nicollet Mall was full of people, the Foshay Tower was still king and the IDS Center was beginning its rise. The skyway system was not yet born so bustling sidewalks teamed with shoppers and businessmen. Mike Evangelist, a 17-year-old from the suburbs, turned his lens to the scenes around him, capturing a vibrant and rapidly changing city. Forty years later, he unearthed this trove of images.

Explore this exhibit of framed photographs and a slideshow, including some unpublished images, with an opening reception. A cash bar and food from D’Amico & Sons Cafe will be available for purchase. The exhibit is a companion to the book of the same name from the Minnesota Historical Society Press, with photographs by Mike Evangelist and text by Andy Sturdevant. The exhibit will be on display through April 3, 2016.

Art at the Center
When: Now through December 31, 2016
Where: Walker Art Center
1750 Hennepin Ave.
Minneapolis, MN  55403

In 2015, the Walker will celebrate the 75th anniversary of its founding as a public art center dedicated to presenting and collecting the art of our times. Curated by the Walker’s executive director Olga Viso and guest curator Joan Rothfuss, the exhibition looks at 75 years of collecting at the Walker—a history distinguished not only by bold and often risk-taking choices but also acquisitions that have consistently breached the boundaries of media or disciplines. The exhibition foregrounds many of these prescient choices.

On view for a two-year period will be many iconic works from the collection, including Edward Hopper’s Office at Night (1940), Franz Marc’s The Large Blue Horses (1911), Chuck Close’s Big Self-Portrait (1967–1968), Yves Klein’s Mondo Cane Shroud (1961), and others. Additional highlights include Dan Graham’s sculpture New Space for Showing Videos, which showcases clips of some 60 visiting filmmakers as part of the long-running Walker Dialogue and Retrospectives series.
