Choosing to build a new home is such an exciting thing to do and one of the most enjoyable places to put your design skills to the test is in creating the perfect bathroom. By now you know what you want in a bathroom. For some it might mean only a soaking tub while others don’t want to take up extra space with a large fixture that never gets used and instead opt for a space saving walk in shower. No matter what your perfect bathroom design is you can customize most baths to fit your needs. If you’re lucky enough to be involved in the building process, and to have input, this article will help you to make the best of the space you have.

A perfect bathroom is all about the storage. Ask any woman and they will tell you there’s never enough storage in the bathroom, these 6 tips will help you find added space you never knew you had.

1. Vanity Height – Adjust the height of the vanity to add customization to your bathrooms. Lower the vanity to between 30 – 32 inches for shorter people or children. If you have a Jack and Jill bath or a Mother in Law apartment you could lower the vanities and make use of the sink easier. For taller people raise the vanity to between 34 – 42 inches.

2. Vertical Storage – Need more storage but there’s no more room under the sink? Go up. Add cabinetry or shelving to add storage for items that aren’t needed as often as easier to reach items. Use the shelves to showcase knick knacks or colorful linens.

3. Self Standing Storage – To add even more storage for items that you might not want to display use an old piece of furniture such as a wooden locker or chest. Match the piece to your bathroom decor or go for an eclectic look and have nothing match.

4. Even More Storage – If shelving and closets don’t add enough storage to your bathroom use hooks and towel racks to utilize even more of the space in the room. You can find beautiful antique hooks at thrift stores and online. In fact if you’re creative just about anything can be made into a hook or drawer pull.

5. Display Areas – A bathroom shouldn’t just be about business, there should also be a more whimsical side to it. It’s a room that gets used a lot so it should be a comforting place as well as comfortable. Create beautiful showcase areas by using the space between the walls. Create display areas or shadow boxes that are recessed into the wall. Show off your favorite lotions and soaps or roll up spare towels and store them inside.

6. Maximize your Space – Even if you don’t have a large bathroom you can still make the most of a small area. Add a mirror to the wall opposite the vanity mirror. It will make the room feel much larger, and allow you to see your backside easily. Use hooks and clips to hold towels, hair accessories and even jewelry. Use baskets to contain small items that might get easily lost or misplaced in a large drawer.
